Simulated Practice Learning Package
A filmed performance of the play, The Possibility of Colour, as well as some of Pete's short films, are being used as the foundation of a new theatre & film based 'Simulated Practice Learning Package' which provides between 2 and 10 days of simulated practice learning for student nurses across all four fields of nursing.
The package will use curated clips from the play and films to help students reflect and develop practice around several core themes, including communication skills, empathy and person-centred care, as well as several optional themes including mental health, self-harm and suicidal ideation, trauma informed practice, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), military mental health, voice hearing, neurodiversity, synaesthesia, and many more. Students will also learn basic acting techniques to help them develop better communication and empathy skills, whilst also supporting more authentic and impactful roleplay exercises.
Backed by NHS England and with close involvement from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to ensure it aligns with NMC standards, Pete is co-developing the package with expert input from senior lecturers and simulated practice learning supervisors from several UK universities, with several pilots of the package planned for the 2024/25 academic year.
Following this, we aim to have the final package fully developed, tested, accredited and ready for full launch by September 2025.
There is also interest to expand this approach for use within the training of other health and social care professionals, including medicine, AHPs, clinical psychology, social work, and more.
